To Prince Eugéne Napoleon, son of Josephine by her first husband Alexandre de Beauharnais, whom Napoleon had adopted that year. Boldly signed as Emperor, the most powerful man in Europe at the time. Light stain at top left margin; else Fine. <b><font size=-1>Eugéne Beauharnais</font></b> (1781-1824) had served with Napoleon in Egypt. He was created a prince in 1804 and appointed viceroy of Italy the following year by Napoleon who had also named himself king. Eugéne later distinguished himself in the Austrian campaign of 1809 and commanded an army corps in the Russian campaign, retiring to Bavaria after 1814.
