NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
(1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Manuscript D.S. "Np", 2pp. sm. folio, [Paris], Feb. 6, 1811. Napoleon is sent a manuscript L.S. by HENRI-JACQUES CLARKE (1765 - 1818), French Marshall, private secretary to Napoleon during the Consulate, and now Minister of War, seeking permanent leave for: "...Alexandre, soldier with the 9th Regiment of Infantry...he is the only and last son of his family, who is able to support his invalid and old mother. He lost two brothers in active service, and the two others left are in troops of line...brother Nicholas...died in the hospital at Metz...brother Jean...killed...at Dissentes...". Clarke signs as "Le Duc de Feltre" at conclusion. On the first page, Napoleon mercifully grants the soldier leave, boldly signing in the left margin. Light toning, else very good.
