NAPOLEON BONAPARTE: (1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. On May 3 and 5, 1811, Napoleon's Army of Portugal, commanded by Andre Massena, met Wellington at Fuentes de Onoro on the Spanish/Portuguese border. There, following a protracted and bloody battle, he endured his second decisive defeat by Wellington during the Portugal campaign, losing nearly 2,200 men in the process. Less than a week later, Napoleon replaced Massena with Auguste-Frederoc Marmont, Duc de Raguse (1774-1852) was one of Napoleon's most powerful officers.
