NAPOLEON BONAPARTE: (1769 - 1821) The "Little Corporal" whose brilliance in the field of battle and as Emperor of France has made him perhaps the most important figure of post-Renaissance Europe. Important L.S. "Nap" with one illegible holograph emendation, 1p. 8vo., Cherbourg, May 29, 1811. Following his disastrous Portugal campaign, Napoleon nominates a new head of the army, in part: "...I sent back your correspondence to Portugal. Make it known to the Duke of Raguse that I have nominated him general of the division. Repeat to him that he is in charge of sending back to France the generals who convened there and organizing his army in the manner that he judges the most convenient...". August-Frederic Marmont, Duc de Raguse (1774-1852) was one of Napoleon's most powerful officers, succeeding Ney in command of the VI corps under Andre Massena who led the disastrous campaign in which he lost to Wellington twice by March 1811. Here, Napoleon places him in command of the Army of Portugal, which officially took place in May 1811. Top right corner clipped, very good condition. $1,500-2,000
