NAN LURIE, Baseball Painting, Dodgers & Yankees
Original oil on canvas painting by Nan Lurie (American, 1910-1985). Image is a stylized representation of a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and another New York team, circa 1950s. Signed at lower right. Canvas measures 21" x 27", framed to 26" x 32". Good visual condition with repairs. Two patches visible verso.

Clearly visible on the uniforms are the words "Dodgers" and "New York" which was worn by both the Giants and the Yankees at the time. The painting also shows a black player in the New York uniform. The Giants integrated African American players in the late 1940s and played the Dodgers many times in that era. However, it could also be a depiction of the 1955 World Series in which the Dodgers played the New York Yankees, the same season that the Yankees added Elston Howard to their roster. Either way it is a rare modern art depiction of Major League Baseball at a pivotal time.
