While the saturation of color and subject matter are signature characteristics of Goldin's work, the photograph presents a premeditated session in which Goldin captured the drag performer, John Heys, dressed and posed as the great fashion editor Diana Vreeland. The work is a wonderful relief from her earlier harsh documents of a drug- and AIDS-dominated urban culture. The lighting is deliberately dramatic, adding to the over-the-top theatricality of the subject. Here she is celebrating the work of a performer she respected in a positive and humorous composition, which she and Heys worked together to perfect.
