NAMEPLATE “MERRIE CARLISLE”. This curved 60“ engraved brass nameplate was carried by the LNWR Precedent Class 2-4-0, LNWR 860, built at Crewe in May 1877. It became a ‘Renewed Precedent’ in November 1894 as Works No. 3535, LMS 5050 in due course and was finally scrapped in 1933. Apparently the name derives from the jollity surrounding the thanksgiving for the restoration of Sir Urre of the Mount of Arthurian Legend to good health and the marriage of his sister to Sir Gawaine at Carlisle (known then as Carlshylle). The plate is face-polished only, with “Rebuilt 3/95” stamped into the face, and attractively mounted on a polished wood back-plate.
