NAMEPLATE "KNIGHT OF THE THISTLE". This magnificent nameplate, with its swallow-tail splasher, was carried on the fireman's side of the GWR '4000 Star' Class 4-6-0 4012 built at Swindon as Works No. 2301 in March 1908 under Lot 173 at a cost of £3,314 plus £512 for the tender number 1757. Initially allocated to Old Oak Common, she moved to Plymouth Millbay in 1909; was superheated in January 1911; then went back to Old Oak Common until 1920; Laira until 1923; Newton Abbot until 1925; Exeter until 1927; Bristol until 1929 then variously Stafford Road; Exeter; Bath Road; Landore; Taunton; Laira again, and finally Newton Abbot from 1941 until withdrawal on 21st October 1949 after running 1,860,642 miles in service. She was cut up at Swindon during the week ending 25th February 1950. The nameplate, which is polished and repainted, is accompanied by a detailed book on the locomotive's history kindly presented by Bill Peto, archivist of the Great Western Society. See Lot 201.
