French Mechanical and Musical Vignette, Possibly Tharin. This piece is made in the manner of Tharin circa 1860. It measures 20" high and sits on a 19" oval base. Papier mache scene depicts a French village set against a coursing stream with a brick bridge arranged upon an oval ebony base. The houses are made of pasteboard with gesso. Hand-painted architectural details include a windmill and multi-storied edifices. A ship in full mast undulates in the rushing waters as 15 soldiers on horseback (with bugle, flag, and sabers) cross the bridge entering the village. When activated, the soldiers march across the bridge, the ship moves up and down upon the waves, and the windmill turns while music plays. Condition is generally excellent. Mechanism and music function well, and works and presentations are all original. There is a crack in the original globe on the back of the painted side which is not visible from the front. The hand-made and painted scenery is visible from the back upon removal of the glass dome which contains the painted background to enhance the charming scene.
