Murdo MacKenzie (1850 - 1939) was manager of the Matador Land and Cattle Company (1891-1901, 1922-1937) and founding president of the American Stock Growers Association. He was instrumental in getting the Hepburn Act of 1906 passed, which eased railroad fares for western shippers. Between years with Matador, MacKenzie was appointed to the National Conservation Commission by Teddy Roosevelt (1908), then became manager of Brazil Land, Cattle and Packing Company. TR stayed with him in Brazil in 1913. Scots-born, MacKenzie immigrated to the U.S. in 1885 to manage Prairie Land and Cattle Company in Trinidad. After becoming a U.S. citizen, he served as mayor of that town before becoming director of Matador. His influence in the western cattle industry was so great that Murdo, SD is named for him.
