Murders in the Rue Morgue (Universal, 1932).
Murders in the Rue Morgue (Universal, 1932). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). This film is one of the formative films in the great 1930s Golden Age of mad scientist films. It was the second mad scientist film ever made, following the massive success of "Frankenstein" (1931). It has close connection to "Frankenstein" in that it was directed by Robert Florey, who had originally been signed as the director of "Frankenstein" before being replaced by James Whale. Florey has also brought with him Bela Lugosi, who was originally pegged to play his Frankenstein monster. The lobby cards for "Murders" are extremely rare, and we sold one of the cards for this title for $16,100; and another for $10,925 last summer. Offered here is an interesting card as the two stars, Leon Waycoff and Sidney Fox, are shown to the left, looking in horror to their right. In the original pressbook for the film, the entire set of cards is shown, and Lugosi was supposed to be featured in the scene as the object of their fear. It wasn't unusual for Universal to change their lobbies at the last moment and this was certainly the case with this card. This card has had pinholes and minor nits to the border repaired. Fine/Very Fine.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
