Mughal Potentates in late 18th century, Silver Rupee, 11.11g, Alinagar, in the name of Shah Alam II, RY 23, Obv: ‘Haft Kishwar’ couplet of Shah Alam II, Rev: usual ‘Julus’ formula with mint name fully visible at top; ‘javelin’ (bhala / ballam) symbol in S of ‘Julus’ (Not listed in major publications). Complete Mint name on top of reverse. Extremely fine+, very rare.
Alinagar was a small fiefdom, ruled by a Nawab, to the East of Bharatpur. When this coin was struck, Zulfiqar Khan was the Nawab. Not much else is known about the rulers or the territory except that they were tributary to the Jats of Bharatpur. Presently the town is known only as ‘Nagar’.
