Shah Jahan, Silver 1/4 Rupee- Nisar, 2.81g, Shahjahanabad Mint, AH 1066/ RY 29, Obv: Persian legend “Nisar Sahib Qiran Thāni” with RY, Rev: Mint name and AH year. Very fine, exceedingly rare.
This exceptionally preserved Nisar is matched by two similar pieces - one in the British Museum and the other in Ashmolean Museum. It most likely coincides with a special Darbar held by Shah Jahan in which he officially declared his son Dara Shikoh as his successor, awarding him the title ‘Buland Iqbal’ or ‘of firmest fortune’. The youngest son Aurangzeb was sent away on a campaign at Deccan in the same year. The events that followed only three years later proved that Aurangzeb indeed inherited the ‘fortune’ thus bestowed upon Dara by his conspiring and killing.
