Shah Jahan (1627-1658 AD) - silver ½ rupee Nisar of Akbarnagar mint, dated AHXX(6)3/RY2(7), unpublished and probably unique, a handsome example of a new type of Nisar coinage of Shah jahan, 5.60g. Obv: Farsi legend Nisar Sahib Qiran Thani Shahjahan (Badshah Ghazi). Rev: Farsi legend Zarb Akbarnagar Sanah 2(7) Julus Sanah XXX3 Hijree, test mark.

Very fine+, Unique so far.

The date on this unique coin is not quite clear but it could be AH1062/RY27 or AH1063/RY27. Around this time the most significant event that took place was the completion of the Taj Mahal, although that probably has little impact on Bengal, where this coin was struck. At this time, the governor of Bengal was Shah Shuja'a, the second son of the emperor and the years around 1653 were marked by the warming up of the Mughals to other Europeans like the English and the Dutch, to counter the influence of the Portuguese. The first English and Dutch factories in Bengal, at Hooghly and Chinsura, respectively were given the imperial sanction at this time.
