Jahangir, Gold Mohur, 10.95g, Tatta Mint, Ilahi Month Mihr, AH 1032/ RY 18, Obv: Persian legend “Noor al-Din Jahangir Shah Akbar Shah”, Rev: Mint name, Ilahi Month, AH and RY details Uncirculated, exceedingly rare in this grade.
Tatta or Thatta in Sindh became an important trading centre due to its proximity to the mouths of the Indus river in the late 16th century. Its main merchandise was cloth, of which it was a trading and manufacturing hub. It was also the headquarters of Sindh 'Sarkar' under Akbar. During Jahangir's reign the prosperity of Tatta reached its peak - the European traders found it an excellent market town for their activities. But soon afterwards, in 1638 it was hit by a violent storm and it was gradually eclipsed by Surat as the principle Mughal port on the Western Cost.
This mohur of Jahangir is from the same period as the zodiac coins, but they were struck only where the emperor was present. Tatta did not have this good fortune. However, Jahangir's son Khurram halted here while in rebellion against his father.
