Jahangir, Silver Square Rupee, 11.40g, Agra Mint, Ilahi Month Tir, AH 1020/ RY 6, Obv: Persian legend “Noor al-Din Jahangir Shah Akbar Shah”, Rev: AH / RY details, Ilahi Month and Mint. Very fine+, extremely rare.
The coinage of Jahangir shows a number of innovations. After experimentation with heavier standards, the weight of the rupee was reduced to its original standard on 11 Ardibihisht of AH1020. Soon afterwards, rupees for alternate months were struck in square and round shape using the Ilahi era in Agra mint - Farwardin (round), Ardibihisht (square), Khurdad (round), Tir (square), Amardad (round), Shahrewar (square), Mihr (round), Aban (square), Azar (round), Di (square), Bahman (round) and Isfandarmuz (square). Each of these had highly decorated borders. This series of rupee standard coins started in the AH 1020/ RY 6, month Ardibihisht and continued till AH 1028 / RY 13, month Isfandarmuz.
