Jahangir, Silver Zodiacal Leo Rupee, 11.28g, Ahmedabad Mint, AH 1027/ RY 13, Obv: Star studded Lion against a rising sun, RY below, Rev: Persian couplet “Zar-i Ahmadabad ra Dad Zewar / Shah Jahangir Shahenshah Akbar” (The gold of Ahmadabad was given beauty [by] king Jahangir [the son of] King of kings Akbar). Edge filed. Very fine+ to about extremely fine. Jahangir stayed at Ahmedabad for nearly a year after receiving his son Khurram victorious from the Deccan campaigns at Mandu. He arrived in Ahmadabad via Khambayat where he caught his first glimpse of the ocean. While in Ahmadabad, he received several nobles, visited many monuments such as the Sarkhej tomb complex and held wine parties at famous gardens like the Fateh Bagh. ‘Leo’ was a special sign for Jahangir, because it was his birth sign by Iranian astrology. The ‘lion and Sun’ was also the Mughal emblem of state, as the sign of Leo was considered to be the domicile of Jupiter, the planet which is associated with kingship.
