Akbar, Silver Square Rupee, 11.17g, Kalima type, Urdu Mint, Obv: Kalima within a lotus-shaped cartouche and names of the Khalifas in bottom and top corners, Rev: Mint name in centre within a square with legend “Jalal ud-din Muhammad Akbar Badshah Gazi” written around. Extremely fine, extremely rare.
"Urdu" refers to 'camp' or mobile mint. It has no specific location, it moved with the army or the Emperor's entourage. The usage has central Asian / Iranian ancestry. Turkomans, Timurids, Safavids, Qajars, Durranis etc struck coins from such mobile mints with mint-names such as "Urdu", "Rikab", "Zarabkhana-i Rikab" etc. In Akbar's chronicles, the name "Mu'askar-i Iqbal" is used for such a mint - however, we haven't yet found it used on a coin.
Two varieties of coins with mint name ‘Urdu’ are known for Akbar - both are of the ‘Kalima’ type. While one is known for both silver and gold, this type which is much rarer is known only in silver.
