Very rare; we haven't offered this before. Pass issued to WH Holabird (Fred's great grandfather) in 1895. Signed by Thaddeus SC Lowe. Printed on cardstock. Some paper loss on reverse. WH Holabird would acquire distressed railroads for Southern Pacific. He was also a financier for Western resort hotels (like Hotel del Coronado). Thaddeus S. C. Lowe (1832–1913), namesake of Mt. Lowe, was an American aeronaut, inventor, and pioneering Civil War balloonist who served as Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Balloon Corps. He conducted some of the first aerial military reconnaissance missions in world history, using tethered hydrogen balloons to observe Confederate positions and direct artillery fire. After the war, Lowe became a successful industrialist and innovator in gas production, refrigeration, and mountain railway engineering, including the famous Mount Lowe Railway in California.
