Mrs. Polk. Widow of the 11th President.
Mrs. Polk. Widow of the 11th President. A.L.S., Nashville, Tenn., Nov. 5, 1859, 2 pp., to Mrs. Mason. "Permit me to express my sincere and deep sympathy in the great loss you have sustained in the death of your much beloved and distinguished husband. I know that sympathy, tender as it is felt...must be ineffectual...but the memory of the past has recalled to my mind, private friendships and events, which associated your honored husband with the life of my own dear lamented, has filled my heart to speak ...that God may grant you strength to sustain your mind in the great bereavement, my dear Mrs. Mason, it is my prayer. It would give me much pleasure to hear from you...." Mrs. Polk recalls Mrs. Mason's letter to her ten years ago, "when I was too sad to reply" (on the death of Pres. Polk). The subject of this letter, John Mason, held two posts in Polk's Cabinet. Light original folds, else excellent.
