Mozart Regiment. Fragment of silk from
Mozart Regiment. Fragment of silk from the flag of the 40th New York Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Mozart Regiment." About 1 x 2 1/2. The flag was presented to the Regiment on July 3, 1861, by Fernando Wood, Mayor of New York City. It was carried at the Battles of Ball's Bluff and Chancellorsville. At Fair Oaks, every man in the color guard (sixteen) was killed or wounded carrying the flag. The 40th also saw action at Fredericksburg, Bull Run, Gettysburg, and through the Virginia Campaign in 1864-65. Nicely set in plastic case, with photo of Gen. Burnside on horseback. A superb artifact.
