Staff officer and brigadier general (1838–1901) in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States. Civil War-dated manuscript DS, signed “G. M. Sorrel,” one page, 7.25 x 9, May 1, 1864. Field orders issued to Brigadier General J. B. Kershaw, in part: "The Lieut. Gen'l Com'dg [Longstreet] desires that you will at once make an inspection of your division with the view of ascertaining its wants for ordnance and ordnance stores. At the recent review, there was observed to be wanting a great number of cartridge boxes, and the necessary accouterments. The number shows at once by ascertained, and requisition made for the same. It is understood that there are a large number of cartridge boxes that were not used on the occasion referred to, because they were old. The serviceable ones of these should be selected & put in use, and the others turned in." Signed and approved at the conclusion by Sorrel. In fine condition, with splitting along horizontal folds.
