Mount Gaines Mine Ledger and Easy Mine Map
A completely filled payroll ledger from September 16, 1937 to May 15, 1938. Although the paper cover is missing from this 11 x 16” ledger book all pages are legible in a neat penciled hand. Located in Quartzburg, near Hornitos, CA, the mine was in operation as early as 1902 and survived into the late 20th century, producing gold and tungsten in the early years. The mine was a complete community, providing boarding facilities and even a school for the miners’ children. There is still an active Mt. Gaines Mine in the same location operated by Mt. Gaines Rock and producing construction sand and gravel [books.google.com/books? isbn=0738529494... books.google.com/books? isbn=0738529494...]. Accompanying the ledger is a map of the EasyZ Bird Quartz Mine located near Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County. It was a producer of gold, silver and lead in the last half of the 19th century. Due to size, additional shipping fees may be required.
