Mossberg 42MB (C) U.S. British Training Rifle
Featured in this lot we have a Mossberg model 42MB (c) bolt action rifle chambered in .22 long rifle and short rifle. The rifle shows its original walnut stock with dents and scratches but is otherwise in good condition. This bolt action rifle comes with a 23" barrel and Mossberg's S- 130 adjustable rear sights allowing the user to dial in every shot. The rifle shows original factory bluing in very good condition. The rifle is magazine fed. The piece is marked across the top indicating that it was manufactured in the Mossberg & Sons factory in New Haven Connecticut. The rifle shows British proof markings evidence that is as a training rifle sent to Britain. Just two years into WWII, Britain was suffering a serious shortage of suitable training rifles. With all local manufacturers committed to the far higher priority of service arms production, there were simply not enough small caliber rifles to go around. The U.S.A. was already supplying much military materiel, and a request was made for a consignment of .22 rimfire rifles suitable for the purpose. The Mossberg Model 42 rifle was a sporting/target based design which offered an excellent basis on which minor modifications could comparatively easily be made to current production lines; the substitution of the three-quarter length stock with a full-length military style stock being the most significant and obvious. Mechanically the rifle is in good condition with a tight action and operates properly when you pull the trigger. The plastic finger grooves behind the trigger guard are broken. Serial Number: 44913. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
