Mort Meskin - Tales of the Unexpected #10 Cover Original Art (DC, 1956). Talk about buyer's remorse -- the poor sap who purchased this weird-looking lamp got an ancient curse in the bargain! As always, the title tells the whole story: "I Was a Slave to the Wizard's Lamp!" DC stalwart Mort Meskin crafted this creepy cover with dramatic blacks and heaps of detail -- our favorite of which is that fez-wearing spook holding center stage. The image of the genie (and some of the background) were rendered on a separate sheet which was later archivally adhered onto Strathmore by art conservationist Roger Hill; the conjoined area is scarcely noticeable and does not detract at all from the ultra-coolness of the piece. The image area measures 12" x 18" and the art is in Fine condition, with only some minor fraying at the corners of the paper, outside of the image area. Covers from the early DC horror, mystery, and fantasy titles have seldom surfaced in the marketplace, and this is the earliest DC horror cover and most certainly the earliest Tales of the Unexpected cover known to exist!
