A limited edition artist proof signed and numbered print titled "We Still Love You General Lee" by Mort Kunstler, ca. 1983. The print depicts General Lee and his soldiers after the surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. It shows General Lee returning to his camp on Traveller after meeting with U.S. Grant. He wears a full dress uniform, sash, and ceremonial sword. Although defeated, Lee had negotiated generous terms for his men. As he rides past them, the soldiers, many with tears in their eyes, cheer and press towards him. Pausing, Lee told them, "Men, we have fought the war together, and I have done the best I could for you." He then doffed his hat, uttered a heartfelt good-bye, and returned to his camp. At that moment, a tattered soldier shouted from the ranks, "We still love you General Lee." This is the scene that Mort Kunstler has captured in this moving depiction. The print is artist signed and numbered 27 of 50 artist proofs. It has been museum quality framed and matted with an attached gold title plate. It measures 38 x 27 1/2 inches framed. Shipping quoted upon sale.
