A limited edition artist proof signed and numbered print titled "The Gunner and The Colonel" by Mort Kunstler, ca. 1992. The print depicts a dramatic moment during the Battle of Fort Fisher, on the coast of North Carolina on January 15, 1865, when the guns of Shepherd's Battery were overrun by Union troops. Colonel Newton Curtis led the charge with his sword in one hand and guidon in the other. When they reached the top of the steep embankment of the gun emplacement, there was vicious hand to hand fighting. The colonel demanded the surrender of the gunner, still on the carriage of the 10 inch Columbiad trying to fire a point blank into the massed Union troops. The unarmed gunner continued trying to fire until struck down by a sabre blow. This is the tense scene that Mort Kunstler has captured. The print was published by American Print Gallery of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It is artist signed and numbered 21 of 50 artist proofs and includes a certificate of authenticity. It has been museum quality framed and matted with an attached gold title plate. It measures 38 x 26 1/2 inches framed. Shipping quoted upon sale.
