Morse & Co Worchester-marked pre-Civil War era rifle, 22” barrel, 41-1/2” overall, dark brown patina finish, select wood stock, no serial numbers visible. The front sight is missing, the barrel is back slightly out ofthe frame, the stock shows a large chip of wood missing by the rear of the action which extends approx. 2” by 1/2” at widest part. The frame is scroll engraved, the metal surfaces shows a dark brown to black patinawith some scattered light to heavy rust. The stock other than the missing chip is fair to good, the action is no quite working correctly, and may be missing small parts. Only a few of these Morse carbines and armsare known, and this one shows Worchester, but no markings by Muzzy - who was the presumptive maker. This design was used in the manufacture of the Morse carbine at Greenville, SC and Morse went South shortlyafter the outbreak of the Civil War and he may have taken some arms with him. This near-relic was recently found in the Montana area. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
