Rosove 232.A1; Spence 814; Howes M-818; Hill I p.204. Morrell made four voyages, primarily for sealing, into southern and Pacific waters between 1822 and 1831. He visited many of the sub-Antarctic islands, and claimed to have penetrated the Weddell Sea area to 70º14', and thus to be the first American to cross the Antarctic Circle. His narrative is considered to have been the source for Edgar Allen Poe's "Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym".
