ALS signed “William Clarke,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.75 x 10, May 21, 1850. Letter to M. J. Hallowell, in full: “As on my arrival home I found this place flooded with goods and the prospects of business blighted, it became necisary [sic] for me to seek a further market, consequently I have formed a copartnership with Mr. Packard & Brr James for the purpose of taking my stock of goods to the Mormon Settlement at the Salt Lake, the prospects for making money at that place. The object of this letter is to advise you of my movements & motives. So that you may not suffer and unnecisary [sic] uneasiness as to the debt I owe as I expect to be able to meet my engagements. I saw Mr Hutchemon while here and would have talked to him on the subject but for his leaving sooner than I expected. Hoping the above will be satisfactory I remain your friend.” In very good to fine condition, with creasing and intersecting folds.
