Austrian painter (1804–1871) who drew inspiration from chivalry, folklore, and the songs of the people. ALS in German, signed “Moritz,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, personal monogrammed letterhead, June 22, 1868. Lengthy letter to his brother August on the occasion of his 64th birthday. Schwind quips about his age, describes some themes of his recent drawings (including the story of a fat horse), and complains about his eyes, writing (translated), "With the glasses, I can't see the sitter, and without the glasses I can not see my drawing.” In fine condition, with show-through from writing to opposing sides.
