Morgan Dollars 1886-O PCGS MS64

Morgan Dollars 1886-O PCGS graded Mint State 64. Full mint frost. The strike is characteristically soft at the high points, but still is more sharply struck than most. Contact marks are minimal, with most taking the form of merely shiny breaks in the mint luster. At first glance this outstanding coin has the appearance of a Gem, and even upon close inspection, the criteria that separates this treasure of the few that grade a point higher remains arguable. Inspection is suggested.

Mintage of this New Orleans Mint issue approached 11 million coins. Yet today, surviving Mint State examples are quite scarce. Perhaps 5,000 or more exist at all Mint State levels, as established by Q. David Bowers and given in his silver dollar encyclopedia. To date, the major grading services have designated less that half that amount Mint State, with the populations from MS60 to MS63 numbering no more than 300 to 600 each. At the "64" level, the number certified drops to under 200, PCGS and NGC combined, and that is where the availability of this issue stops. PCGS has graded just two higher by one point, NGC none.

The attraction of this example lies not only in the practically unobtainable rarity of a higher graded piece, but in the staggering price spread between the two grades. At the "64" level, a high four-figure sum will probably buy this coin and it will be well worth it, while a specimen grading a single point higher is worth a figure approaching $200,000. Here is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a truly outstanding example, a coin which the new owner can proudly proclaim ownership of as one of the very finest examples in existence. Estimate $5,000.00-$8,000.00
