Morgan Dollars 1884-S PCGS MS63

Morgan Dollars 1884-S PCGS graded Mint State 63. Attractively toned. Quite well struck for the issue, showing partial hair strands over Miss Liberty's ear and clear, but not perfectly defined detail at the eagle's highest breast feathers. Contact marks are minute, minimal and well concealed. There are no apparent hairlines or traces of handling. This coin appears to have been struck using a fresh pair of dies, and as such, there are hints of reflectivity beneath the toning. On more common dates such a notation would not be worthy of mention, but considering the extreme rarity of prooflike "84-S" dollars, even a trace of such is significant.

Offered here is one of the mystery issues within the Morgan dollar series, which in spite of a comparatively large mintage remains a major rarity in Mint State. Pioneer silver dollar dealer Dean Tavenner once observed, "There has never been documented an original roll for 1884-S Morgan silver dollars." They did circulate. Sliders abound and average circulated example are just plain common. Proof that they weren't all stored away and melted at a later date.

The major graded services have seen but a few of this issue come through their doors. PCGS has graded a scant 19 at this level, very few at lower Mint State levels and around a dozen higher. Of that higher number, incredibly one each grades "65," "66," "67" and "68." Someone, somewhere thought to save a few when they were new. Judging from the pristine appearance of the offered example, perhaps it once was a part of the same carefully preserved cache. Here is a coin for the ages that doesn't require a six-figure investment. Very highly recommended. Estimate $16,000.00-$22,500.00
