Morenci,AZ - Greenlee County - c1910 - Vista over Smelter and Town Photograph *Territorial* :
This photo has a nice flow as it depicts the mining town in Gold Gulch. Photograph measures 8”x6”, dark green single matte 12”x10”, high to medium contrast—slightly yellowed, and the focus is sharp. Edges of the matte are worn and the matte suffers from minor warping. Photograph in good condition—minor rubbing on the upper portion. Photographer not identified, but the photo and matte are consistent with the work of M. Culp. Mautz places Culp in Morenci 1909-10, at Culp’s Photo Studio. Morenci is located 6 miles northwest of Clifton. Barnes tells us that the town, “was named by Mr. Church of Detroit Copper Co., who came from Morenci, Mich. First called Joys Camp after Capt. Joy, early settler and prospector” (Arizona Place Names). A post office was established in 1884. Morenci was also the end of the line for the Morenci Southern Narrow Gauge R.R. Mining and Scientific Press states, “During 1911 the district [Morenci-Metcalf] produced 71,500,000 lb. of blister copper, as compared with about 73,154,000 lb. in 1910. The district was one of the earliest copper producers in the state, the output beginning as early as 1873, and since 1880 it has been an important contributor to the copper output of the country … In total production it ranks fourth among the copper districts of the county and second in the state” (Bain, vol. 105, Oct. 26, 1912).
