A fine view looking down on the mine and town of Morenci, AZ. The photograph measures 8 x 5”, with a dark green single matte measuring 12”x9”. The contrast is medium with minor yellowing while the focus is good to sharp. The matte is worn around the edges, with part of the upper right corner missing. The green top color of the matte is also missing in the upper right corner. "M. Culp, Morenci, Ariz." stamped on lower left border of matte. Mautz places Culp in Morenci 1909-10. Barnes states that the town, “was named by Mr. Church of Detroit Copper Co., who came from Morenci, Mich. First called Joys Camp after Capt. Joy, early settler and prospector” (Arizona Place Names). A post office was established in 1884. Morenci was also the end of the line for the Morenci Southern Narrow Gauge R.R. Primary operator was the Detroit Copper Company of Arizona. Morenci is a copper open pit mine located in Greenlee County, southeast Arizona. Morenci is the largest copper mine in North America and one of the largest open pit mines in the world. It began operation in 1872 as an underground mine and moved to open-pit mining in 1937 (Ref: infomine.com).
