More Fun Comics #53 Mile High pedigree (DC, 1940) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages. Offered here is the amazingly high-grade Mile High copy of this key book. It is the second full appearance of the Spectre, who appears in costume on the cover and at the end of the story. Graced by a great bondage cover which shows the Spectre about to make short work of the criminal, this is certainly one of the most sought-after books of the Golden Age. The Mile High collection is famed for its high quality, and this book surpasses even those high standards, going right past Near Mint, to Near Mint+, with perfectly white pages. It has all of the attributes that you would hope to find from this famous collection, including four sharp corners a spine that is tight and free from defects, and the shiny staples without a hint of rust. There is no creasing of any kind, no tears, and no chips. The whole book is perfectly clean and bright. Not only is this book the highest graded copy that has ever been encapsulated by CGC, it is almost undoubtedly the nicest copy in existence. Truly pristine, having remained in a near-perfect state of preservation for over 60 years, it is hard to believe that even the legendary Mile High copy could be this nice. Interestingly. no other major pedigree collection contains a copy of this issue. There is no known San Francisco, Chicago, Allentown, Denver, Pennsylvania or Cosmic Aeroplane copy of More Fun #53. Overstreet says this book is scarce to rare, and The Photo-Journal Guide To Comics lists this book as an "8" on the Scarcity Index, meaning they estimate less than 20 copies left in existence in any condition. This book tells the origin of the Spectre, and features the start of the Captain Desmo feature. It is a classic book from cover to cover, with interior artwork by Bob "Batman" Kane and Bernard "Hour-Man" Baily. This is the first time that the Mile High More Fun #53 has been offered for sale at public auction, making this a unique opportunity that may never come again. A comic that has enjoyed steady growth over the years, this book has always outperformed its Guide values. In 1988, when the Guide listed this book at $5,500, it sold for $26,500, a then-staggering five times Guide. More Funs have always been scarce and highly collectible, with the #52 and #53 leading the pack. It tied for #21 on Overstreet's 2002 Top Golden Age Books list (see page 91 of the 2002 Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide), and is probably the best condition Overstreet Top-25 comic book ever certified by CGC. You may never see a key book nicer than this one. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $36,000. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
