Mordaunt, Sir Charles - 3rd Earl of Peterborough and 1st Earl of Monmouth (1658-1735) English nobleman and military leader; first lord of the treasury. Autograph letter signed ("Mordaunt"), 4 pages, 7 x 9 in., London,13 April 1707. Mordaunt writes to another lord regarding his military service. He complains bitterly about the undeserved hardships he has suffered in the Army (Mordaunt had been recalled to England the month before to explain his conduct during the campaign in Spain against Napoleon and was charged with incompetence and exceeding his authority). He wanted to receive a promotion to Brigadier and was refused, being told that rules could not be broken for anyone, only to find that rules had been broken for someone else who did not deserve the promotion. Overall toning, heavy wear and edge splits at vertical fold.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.
