Moran & Clark $10 Copper Dies Trial VF20 PCGS. Ex: Garrett. K-1, High R.7. Kagin lists this variety on page 348 of his 2001 reference, Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States, where he makes the statement, "Most are struck off center." The present piece is well centered, although the obverse is slightly misaligned toward 3 o'clock. This chocolate-brown piece shows moderate wear. A faint X is scratched onto the obverse exergue, while the reverse displays deeper scratches right of the wreath and at the center. Moran & Clark was one of numerous firms that planned to coin gold pieces in California during the 1849 to 1850 period, but lacked the determination and resources to follow through.
Ex: Arthur C.
