Montreal, LC- The Bank of Montreal $1 Jan. 1, 1849 Ch. # 505-20-10-02a
Founded by nine Montreal merchants in 1817, this institution was for many years the largest bank in Canada and served as the principal bank for decades to both the provincial and Federal governments. Acquisitions through the years led to offices throughout Canada, and in fact the entire structure of Canadian banking was ordained by this bank's adaptation of branch banking within a year of its founding. The Flynn collection contains several rare early Bank of Montreal notes, as well as a host of high grade later examples. This example, overprinted "Brantford" in red, was issued from the bank's Toronto branch. Very Good, a rare note in all grades.
From The Thomas M.
