Montgomery Clift's Bugle From Here to Eternity
Montgomery Clift's Bugle from "From Here to Eternity." One of the great heartbreaking moments in Hollywood films is the scene in From Here to Eternity (1953) in which Private Robert E Lee Pruitt (Montgomery Clift), mourning the death of his friend Private Angelo Maggio (Frank Sinatra), goes out into the night and blows "Taps." Here is the bugle Clift used in that unforgettable scene. The incredibly intense actor actually learned to play the bugle, even though he realized the studio, Columbia, would dub in the work of a professional in the release print. Clift was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and Sinatra won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the movie, which was a critical and box office smash. The bugle has lost some if its shine over the past 50-plus years, and has a tiny ding on the side of the bell's mouth. "U.S. Regulation Made in U.S.A." is engraved near the bell. Curiously, when Clift failed to win the Oscar for this performance, director Fred Zinnemann, who did win the Best Director award for From Here to Eternity (and had insisted on Clift's casting) presented the actor with a consolation prize: a miniature bugle. This historic prop will stir memories of one of the movie's most powerful and touching scenes and performances.
