Career US Army officer, civil engineer, construction engineer for a number of facilities in Washington, DC, and quartermaster general of the US Army during and after the American Civil War (1816–1892). War-dated handwritten endorsement, signed “M. C. Meigs,” on the reverse of an April 18, 1864, letter to Meigs from a soldier requesting a leave of absence “on account of serious illness.” Endorsed on the reverse, “approved, M. C. Meigs, Gen, 18 ap 64.” Reverse also bears two other endorsements, with one referring to the soldier as “seriously, if not dangerously ill.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, Meigs’s signature hurried, and some scattered light soiling.
