Montana Territory Marked Mexican Loop Holster for Remington Single Action Revolver
"Mexican Loop" holster made by Joseph Sullivan, in Ft. Benton, Montana Territory, 1880-1883. This russet leather holster is made for a Remington model 1890 Single Action Revolver with 7 1/2 inch barrel. The Mexican Loop holster is made of medium weight russet skirting leather and has a recurved throat profile with semi-contoured body and open toe. The full length skirt has a one-piece loop attached to the skirt by two copper rivets. The holster has a sewn leather liner and is decorated with intricate stamped tooling that covers the entire holster body and skirt. The center of the holster body is stamped with a prominent oval cartouche with double-line borders surrounding: "JOSEPH SULLIVAN / MAKER / FT. BENTON, M.T." A Mexican Loop holster made by Joseph Sullivan of Ft. Benton in Montana Territory is illustrated and described on pages 102-103 of "PACKING IRON" by Richard C. Rattenbury.

Condition: Very good. The holster shows moderate handling wear and retains the outline of a Remington Single Action revolver. The surfaces are smooth and free from cracks or flaking. All of the stitching is tight. The decorative tooling is crisp and the maker's cartouche on the holster body is clear. This is a very good example of a classic 1880, western-made holster for a Remington model 1890 Single Action Revolver.
