Montana Territory, Jos. Sullivan Marked Leather Cartridge Belt for a Remington Single Action Army Re
Made by Joseph Sullivan, in Ft. Benton, Montana Territory, 1880-1883, this russet cartridge belt has thirty-three 44-40 caliber cartridge loops. The cartridge belt is made of folded, russet skirting leather with an iron buckle with scalloped edges. The tongue billet, buckle chape and cartridge loops are sewn to the belt body. The belt is not decorated but the tongue billet is stamped: "JOS, SULLIVAN". A Mexican cartridge belt made by Joseph Sullivan of Ft. Benton in Montana Territory is illustrated and described on pages 102-103 of "PACKING IRON" by Richard C. Rattenbury.

Condition: Very good. The belt shows moderate handling wear and the surfaces are smooth and free from cracks or flaking. The stitching on the tongue billet, buckle chape, cartridge loops and edges on the belt is tight. The buckle has a dark patina. The maker's mark on the chape is crisp. Wear is limited to some flex marks and some minor flaking on the edges of the belt. This is a very good example of a classic 1880s western-made cartridge belt for a Remington model 1890 Single Action Revolver.
