For your consideration is a 19th century handwritten letter from the office of the United States Penitentiary, territory of Montana, written by the Warden, Tom McTague. The penitentiary was located in Deer Lodge, Montana and this letter is dated, February, 20th, 1886. The letterhead indicates that R.S. Kelley was the U.S. Marshal and Tom McTague was warden. The letter is to the Territorial Auditor, J.P. Woolman, and informs him that McTague has discharged from the penitentiary the convict, J. Bennett, because he had been pardoned by the Acting Governor of Montana. There is also a receipt for clothing furnished to Bennett. It is signed by Tom McTague. This piece is a well preserved document, showing little sign of wear to the lined paper or ink. It does show fold creases to fit in an envelope. It measures 8.5" x 11".
