This is an early Montana Territory directory published in Montana, the first one having been published in 1868 (McMurtrie, Montana Imprints 36). Montana became a territory on May 26, 1864. The views of Helena and Virginia City are very early bird's-eye views of those cities. The Helena view also appears in Strahorn's 1879 promotional Resources of Montana Territory. A certain amount of bibliographical confusion surrounds this book. Some collations call for four and some five plates; however, there are five plates in this book. The work is an important source in that it describes much on the early gold discoveries, the mining camps and settlements, the organization of the Territory, ... chronological history of events in early Montana during the 1860s along with a review of early history. The directory is arranged by county with a short history of each followed by listings for each mining camp, settlement, and town within the county. Helena has a separate classified business directory starting with a listing of Assayers. A two-page description of the United States Assay Office is found on p. 175-6. Some bibliographers (Howes, Adams) seem to imply that Dimsdale's Vigilantes (Virginia City, 1866) is reprinted here. In fact, the reprinting here, which is the first one, is partial and includes only nine chapters (1-4, 10, 14, 15, 18, and 20; pp. 2-50) rather than the usually reported twenty chapters. However, the most significant chapters in this classic were included. Streeter called Professor Thomas J. Dimsdales Vigilantes "The first book printed in Montana and one of the best accounts of the action of the Vigilance Committee, the institution that brought justice to the western frontier." Charles Dickens is reported to have said of the work: ìThis is the most interesting book I ever read in my life." No collection of Dimsdale's work is complete without this genuine second edition. McMurtrie, Montana Imprints 121. Streeter IV, 2251, Graff 4539. Howes U.S. Iana W-108. Adams, Guns 2318. Bradford 3651. Eberstadt 168:343. Condition of the rebacked volume is overall fine. A rare classic in Western Americana. Helena Montana 1872
