Ranching has long been a staple of Montana's culture and economy. As one of the first industries in Montana, cattlemen appeared in the valleys of Western Montana in the 1860s to answer the demand of beef in mining towns. Cowboys became a thing of legend, protecting herds from the elements and predation of man and beast. Ranching is an important part of Montana's history and present day.
