British soldier in the Royal Field Artillery during World War I who authored two books on his experiences, Clouds That Flee and With the Guns East and West. Fascinating handwritten statement, signed “Montague H. Cooke, Major/Lieut. Colonel,” one page, 10 x 7, no date. Cooke pens a statement entitled “The Taking of Jerusalem,” in full: “At 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 9th 1917, I had been over two hours alone with one orderly in Jerusalem, on the steps of the post office, with eleven prisoners behind its locked doors; and a sea of expectant faces of every hue staring up at me from the ‘Place’ below the steps: ‘Is it true that we shall be under British rule?’—Round the corner the 53rd (Welsh) Division, swung up the Bethlehem road. ‘God be praised,’ they cried.” Cooke also signed on the second adjoining page. In fine condition, with mild toning.
