Mokelumne and Campo Seco Canal & Mining Company stock certificate, incorporated in California, for Mokelumne Hill mine in Calaveras County. Certificate No. 42, issued to C.C. Bowman of San Francisco for 100 shares ($100 per share) on January 3, 1859, signed by C.C. Bowman (president). Cancelled. The certificate displays an exceptionally detailed vignette (left side) of a mountain scene, with miners working sluice boxes at various levels; displays excellent detail in the landscape and texture for a lithograph.

The Mokelumne Hill and Campo Seco Canal and Mining Company formed in Mokelumne Hill, California, on November 16, 1852, to work the immense gravel deposits in the vicinity of Mokelumne Hill and Chili Gulch. This is one of the all time California gold rush certificates and the Mokelumne Hill and Campo Seco Canal and Mining Company was the first to use the famous Britton and Rey mining design, a new hydraulic technique. The company was also responsible for constructing canals and ditches in the area to supply water for mining the placer deposits and, eventually, supplied water for agriculture and hydraulic machinery. The company provided water to many mines and for various purposes until Congress enacted the Sawyer Act of 1884, limiting hydraulic mining in the state.
