Scarce unsigned pamphlet by the group ‘The Bond’ entitled “Two Letters to Gandhi, from Martin Buber and J. L. Magnes,” 44 pages, 5.25 x 7.5, published by Rubin Mass, Jerusalem, April 1939. The booklet contains the two letters as well as Gandhi’s four-page response. The purpose of the publication is outlined inside the front cover, in part: “We open this series with two letters to Gandhi. They were written independently of one another. This conversation between Jews and Gandhi is the first between Israel and India. This is a significant moment in our eyes.” Some chipping to spine and toning and dampstaining to edges, otherwise fine condition. Written by two of the leading Jewish adherents of non-violence, Buber’s and Magnes’s letters are a response to Gandhi’s advice to the Jews of Germany to adopt the tactics of Satyagraha (Passive Resistance) in the face of Nazi persecution.
