LS in Gujurati, signed in pencil “Bapu’s blessings,” one page, 4.25 x 6.75, September 3, 1936. Letter to his friend Dr. Behram Navroji Khambatta. In part (translated): “I have both of yours letters and Rs. 1000. Our of which Rs. 500 is from you and Rs. 500 from Dinbai Khan. I will send Dinbai’s amount to Verrier Elwin to have him send it for the Good people, and utilise your amount for the Harijan brothers and sisters. I will not publish your text about Dinbai’s. Thank Dinbai on my behalf.” Lightly trimmed edges, pencil notation and filing stamp along top edge, a couple trivial spots, and the signature soemwhat light, otherwise fine condition.

Elwin, to whom Gandhi makes reference, was an English missionary working in tribal areas of Central and Northeastern India. The two men originally met in 1928 at a religious conference, where Elwin was so taken by the simplicity and spiritual power of the Mahatma that he became a great admirer, disciple, and participant in India’s freedom struggle. Gandhi’s notice that he was forwarding 500 rupees to Elwin to benefit “the Good people” which was unquestionably met with appreciative joy by the missionary and those he served. A great letter reflecting the spirit of truth, purity, and love exuded by Gandhi.
